This paper presents the preliminary results of an on-going experimental study on the behaviour of corroded reinforced concrete beams rehabilitated with fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets. Ten reinforced concrete beam specimens (152x254x3200 mm) were constructed. Nine specimens were chloride-contaminated by premixing 2% chlorides by weight of cement in the bottom third of each specimen along the middle third of the length. These nine specimens were exposed to moderate corrosion degree by means of a constant impressed current and are currently being repaired using two different FRP schemes. One scheme includes flexural strengthening with CFRP sheets followed by U-wrapping the cross-section with CFRP sheets. The other scheme includes flexural strengthening with CFRP sheets followed by U-wrapping the cross-section with GFRP sheets. The different wrapping schemes permit the examination of the confinement effects with different FRP types. Immediately after FRP repair, some specimens will be tested in flexure to failure to examine the short-term performance. While other specimens will be exposed to further corrosion up to different degrees and then tested to failure to examine the long-term performance. The test program will provide valuable data on the short and the long-term performance of FRP repaired and corroded beams. This paper describes the fabrication, accelerated corrosion process and presents initial resu/ts in terms of cracking behaviour due to corrosion of the steel reinforcement.
