Over the past twenty years the industrial automation industry has seen revolutionary developments in sensing technologies. The development of photoelectric, inductive, capacitive and ultrasonic sensors has resulted in tremendous productivity gains. The advances include rugged housings, the addition of diagnostic LED(s), longer sensing ranges, quick-disconnect cables, expanded varieties both in size and shape, as well as networking and intelligence features. In spite of these advances, one could argue that the issues related to installation, adjusting and protecting proximity sensors have been largely over-looked. This paper outlines the development of an emerging product category called "Sensor Accessories" and how their use increases sensor reliability.
