During the ‘90s, the introduction of battery powered electromechanicalintervention tools increased the versatility ofslickline service and changed its image from a simple methodthat performed mechanical workovers to a complex servicetechnology that could provide safe, cost-efficient alternativesfor:1. Locating downhole tubular goods/profiles2. Producing quality logs from downhole memory surveys athalf the cost of traditional services3. Accurate depth measurement for support of all newcompletion technologies4. Setting packers without explosives5. Perforating or cutting tubing or casing.Slickline has again expanded its capabilities. In additionto its proven performance for well remediation, maintenance,and pressure control applications, the new enhancements tothe self-powered slickline tools can now be used to performdiagnostic and conformance control functions requiringmemory production logging.Applications that require electrical initiation or mechanicalmanipulation at the tool interface can now be performed withslickline and battery power, insulating the tools from thesurface equipment. Mechanical signals transmitted throughthe wire control the tool start and stop functions and providereal time position telemetry. As a result of the advances inservice tools, slickline has increased the scope of its serviceswithout a compromise to operational safety and job efficiencyand offers the most cost efficient services in well workovers.The case histories will describe how the electromechanicalintervention tools provide a cost-effectivealternative to traditional cased-hole logging systems for manyapplications as well as many operations that traditionally hadto be performed by other service options.
