Dofasco conventionally uses brick for the ladle safety and working linings in both of its facilities. The company has implemented a project to convert the safety linings of the ladles to a monolithic alumina spinel design with tight thickness tolerances. A new installation method has been developed with the supplier to provide a smooth 'castable like' surface that requires no backfill between the safety and working lining.
