The cracking phenomenon occurring during strip casting of an AISI 304 stainless steel was investigated by understanding the formation mechanisms of cracks and depressions and by correlating them with solidification behaviors. The crack occurrence was closely related with inhomogeneous solidification conditions determined by key solidification factors such as roll surface treatment, gas atmosphere and formation of black layer, which was mainly represented by formation of depressions. The number and size of cracks were considerably reduced by distributing the depressions finely and evenly over the cast strip surface by the proper selection of above factors.
