Environmental monitoring is now a requirement for many farming operations and to this end a number of reports have been compiled within the Australian sugar industry to establish best practice guidelines for industry members. However, the financial impost of compliance on growers has not been assessed. The incorporation of environmental monitoring as part of best practice benchmarking is an industry first. The RCS (Resource Consulting Services)/BSES business benchmarking program established a set of self-assessment questions in the overall business assessment. An overall `environmental score' was derived on the basis of a weighted response given by participants. Growers were sourced from numerous mill areas along the eastern coast of Australia, covering a wide variety of managerial practices to achieve a balanced insight into the current environmnental status of the industry.
