Virtual reality and dynamic statistical graphics: A bidirectional link in a heterogeneous, distributed computing environment

We present the implementation of a bidirectional link between RA_3DIO and XGobi, based on the middleware standard DCE. RA_3DIO is a virtual reality framework for the design and management of mobile phone networks and the optimization of antenna positions. XGobi is a software package particularly useful for the analysis of multivariate statistical data. RA_3DIO only runs under a PC Windows environment and XGobi under Unix. We describe the main functionality of the link and related topics such as concurrency and linked brushing, and we discuss the underlying internal communication structures. Finally, we recommend some software design rules with respect to our experiences with the presented link.
