A novel methodology for the rapid development and deployment of cost-effective Interactive Sensor Data Processing (ISDP) workstations and servers is presented. ISDP Imagers implement this methodology by rendering algorithmic, architectural and implementation complexities transparent, allowing non-expert application-developers to work productively and end-users to iteratively create and execute ISDP pipelines. Performance-scalable ISDP Engines for the execution of ISDP Imagers, implementing an abstract massively data-parallel processing architecture that can be efficiently mapped to emerging COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf) PCI multiprocessor cards, are described. The paper reports the results of experimental investigations of ISDP Imagers and Engines, incorporating arrays of Philips Trimedia DSP processors, and concludes on their overall cost-effectiveness.
