Commodity computers, interconnected through the highspeed networks and called multicomputers become the basic hardware. Multicomputers need new data structures, scaling over multiple server nodes to very large sizes. Scalable Distributed Data Structures (SDDSs) were proposed for multicomputers and are now well known. We develop the prototype SDDS manager called SDDS-2000 for Wintel multicomputers. We present the implementation of the SDDS termed LH*_(LH) designed for high-performance scalable hash files taking profit from large distributed RAM. We overview our technical choices and experimental performance measures. The access times per key insert or search we have measured are about 0.3 ms. This is thirty time faster than typical access times of traditional disk files. It is likely that files on disks or other mechanical devices will never be as fast.
