In this paper, we design and implement a low-level storage manager for efficient storage and retrieval of multimedia data in NoD(News-on-Demand) services. Our low-level storage manager not only stores video stream data of news video objects themselves, but also handles their index information. Our manager provides an inverted file method for efficient text-based retrieval and a high-dimensional index structure, like the X-tree, for content-based retrieval on video data. In addition, our low-level storage manager provides APIs(Application Programmable Interfaces) for storing video objects and their index information extracted from hierarchical news video as well as APIs for retrieving video objects by using cursors. Finally, we implement our low-level storage manager based on the SHORE( Scalable Heterogeneous Object REpository) storage system by using a standard C++ language on the UNIX operating system.
