A Taxonomy of Coordinating Information Technologies

BPR efforts are often guided by the incorporation of information technologies which enable a higher or distinctive business throughput. One key criteria for selecting information technologies is the coordination capabilities that they may provide to a business process. However, this topic has not been researched extensively. This paper develops a taxonomy whose classification dimensions link the attributes of information technology applications with those of organizational dependencies, which are at the root of the coordination problems found in business processes. Organizational dependencies are described in terms of information based structures.
