We have investigated widely tunable distributed feedback lasers with lateral coupling. This concept is suitable for a variety of material systems. We demonstrated devices on the GaInNAs/GaAs and the InGaAsP/InP material system with high side mode suppression rations (SMSR) and wide tuning ranges.
