Certain tumors, including many that are found in the lung, over-express CD44, a family of cell surface receptors which bind to glycosaminoglycans. Incorporation of lipid derivatives of hyaluronan (HA) into liposomes (HAL), targets drug-containing liposomes to tumor cells that express CD44. Binding of HAL to target cells was rapid, saturatable, selective, and leads to internalization of the HAL. Here we described a novel tumor targeting ligand that provides a robust, versatile and efficient system for targeting drugs to a wide variety of tumors in vivo.
