In order to study the structure and function of the skin, cultured full-thickness skin alternatives have been under development over the past decade.~1 These bioengineered skin alternatives were first developed for toxicity testing and have expanded to include use as permanent skin replacements for burn victims.~2 Previous studies (unpublished) indicate the Bioengineered Human Skin (BHS) has a similar permeability to human cadaver skin when using three model drugs (tamoxifen, caffeine, and hydrocortisone). The main objective of this study was to determine and compare the lipid composition of the BHS to published reports of lipid composition of human skin.
