Electrotransport (ET) is the use of an electrical potential to aid movement of molecules through biological tissues such as skin. Drug delivery by transdermal ET can offer a painless and noninvasive alternative to traditional methods of parenteral drug delivery. Using E-TRANS~TM technology, ALZA has developed ET systems that are small enough to be worn unobtrusively with few restrictions on patient activity, and that provide preprogrammed, sensor-actuated, or patient-controlled drug delivery.
