Estradiol is the most potent naturally occurring estrogen in mammals. Estradiol trandermal systems provides systemic estrogen replacement therapy. The aim of this work was to evalaute the release profile of commercial estradiol transdermal systems (13 in total). The applicability and reliability of some mathematical kinetic models to describe the drug release from these systems was also evalauted. The transdermal systems were matrix diffusion controlled type, STT 1 (37.5, 50, 75), STT 3 (25, 50, 100), STT 4 (25, 50, 100) and STT 5, or membrane controlled type, STT 2 (25, 50, 100).
