New air pollution regulations on SO_2 and NO_x emission in China, especially "two control zones", have driven the development of technologies to reduce SO_2 and NO_x emissions. Inner Mongolia Autonomy Region is abundant in coal resources and the most important electric power resources base, which is responsible for supplying electricity to the northern region of China. Therefore, pollution control of coal combustion in coal-fired power plants in Inner Mongolia is very urgent task. Due to the high costs associated with retrofit of desulfurization and denitration technologies, two unfortunate results have been the closing of older facilities and the switching to more expensive, but cleaner, fuels. It is very difficulty in Inner Mongolia which is backward in economy. So the new low-cost and high efficiency flue gas desulfurization and denitration techniques should be researched and developed. This paper at first analyzes the status and developing trends of SO_2 and NO_x emission in coal-fired power plants in Inner Mongolia and examines the traditional control techniques of SO_2 and NO_x emission. The new desulfurization and denitration technologies based on coal-fired power plants in Inner Mongolia, which have been researched and developed by Electric Power College of Inner Mongolia Polytechnic University, are introduced. They include flue gas desulfurization technology by bacteria catalysis and low NO_x tangentially staged air combustion technology. These techniques have comparable high desulfurization efficiency, but have low investments and operating costs, thus, they can be widely used. The fundament SO_2 and NO_x emission reduction approaches for Inner Mongolia Autonomy Region are discussed in details.
