aMetal losses during remelting is common when recycling aluminium. Reduction of these losses could give a substantial economic gain. Experiments with continuous feeding of aluminium plates into molten aluminium have been performed. A simple steady-state mathematical model has been developed that gives the temeprature profile and the penetration depth into the melt as a function of the feeding velocity, superheat, and the heat-transfer coefficients from melt to solid and from a solidified shell to the plate. A criterion for shell formation is also formulated.
