A new high-quality multichannel audio compression algorithm based on the MPEG-2 Advanced AudioCoding (AAC) is presented in this paper. The Karhunen-Loeve Transform (KLT) is used on multichannel audiosignals in the pre-processing stage to remove the inter-channel redundancy. Then signals in the de-correlatedchannels are compressed using a modified AAC main profile encoder. Experimental results show that comparedwith the original AAC, the proposed algorithm achieves better performance with the objective Mask-to-Noise-Ratio(MNR) measurement while maintaining similar computational complexity.
