Mixing monophonic and stereophonic sound sources into multi-channel surround istraditionally done using divergence-based X-Y controls, or by grouping stereo panners.An enhanced method is proposed, based on surround phantom positioning, presenting anatural generalization of traditional stereo mixing techniques. Using matrixmanipulations, each stereophonic source is rotated in the surround coordinate system toan arbitrary direction within 360°, its stereophonic width is stretched to any desired stagewidth from 0° to 360°, and its distance from the listener is set using a distance pan-pot,based on a room simulation. The proposed method is also compatible with surroundsound inputs. The method has been implemented in real-time DSP, with applications inboth audio production and consumer audio.
