The efficiency of a pultrusion line and the properties of the resulting composite aredependant on the resin system, fiber architecture, wetting strategy and processingparameters (pull speed, die temperature and post processing). Huntsman Polyurethanes inconjunction with Bolton Resin Laboratories will present a study of pultrusion parameters andphysical properties as they reflect the use of three basic resin systems; polyurethane, epoxyand vinyl ester.This study is a preliminary investigation carried out to compare the processingparameters and physical properties of these three resin families as they are used in theproduction of pultruded composites. In this study, processing conditions such as pull speedand reinforcement geometry are kept constant, while on-line data acquisition is utilized as adiagnostic tool for recording the performance of each resin system. Physical properties suchas tensile strength, flexural modulus, density, impact strength, hardness, flammability,coefficient of linear expansion, water absorption and heat deflection temperature will bepresented for discussion. Data will be presented for both aged and un-aged samples. Thedata from this study will make an excellent design tool for pultruders seeking newopportunities. Additionally, the pultrusion industry will gain a better understanding of thebenefits provided by the use of polyurethane. It is anticipated that the information presentedin this seminar will enable the pultruders to approach new markets within the pultrusionworld.
