Cochannel interference is a major impairment that limits the capacity of cellular radio systems. A coding scheme for nonlinear cochannel interference cancellation is discussed. This canceller uses trellis-coded modulation with maximum-likelihood sequence estimation of both the desired signal and cochannel interference. This technique permits operation even when the signal-to-interference ratio is 0 dB. This performance advantage is due to the sophisticated trellis-coding designed for each user. A novel trellis coding is proposed, and its superior bit error rate performance is shown by computer simulations.
