The author focuses on the issues and problems associated withexpanding a distributed operating system's (DOS) clusters across a widearea network (WAN). This area is investigated to determine thefeasibility of developing DOS and WAN coordination for improved systemload balancing. Information and controls of interest to both the DOS andWAN are investigated. An initial discrete-event simulation of theDOS/WAN interaction potential is described. Ideas for further developingDOS/WAN interaction are discussed in the context of potential Air Forceapplications and anticipated developments within both the DOS and WANtechnologies
