The true beginnings of french astronautics 1938-1959

There is an old tradition of rocketry in France, dating back to the military black powder rockets of the Ruggieri brothers in the 18th century, amplified by the industrialisation of the system by Commander susane in the Ecole de Pyrotechnie de Metz during the second half of the 19th century. France leading position was confirmed during the Great War with the first air-to-air missiles, the rockets of Lieutenant de Vaisseau le Prieur, used against the German Zeppelins and drachens, then with the first multi-stage rockets of Louis Damblanc in 1935.
