Toxic element dispersal in the orlovka deposit area, transbaikalia, Russia

Tailing and water samples were collected within the abandoned mining field of Orlovka in Eastern Transbaikalia, Russia during preliminary work in the investigation of environmental contamination by potentially toxic elements. Significant concentrations of W, U, Th, Pb, As, F, and Bi were found in soils around the mine tailings and ore processing plant as well as in associated drainate waters. A GIS-based environmentally-focussed geochemical and mineralogical study has been undertaken in order to assess potential risk and to devleop methods of risk prevention.
