Sulphide-rich chromite ores and sulphide-free chromite ores can be distinguished in the Potosi Mine, in the Moa-Baracoa ophiolitic massif (eastern Cuba). Whereas sulphide-free ores are similar to podiform chromitites, sulphide-rich ores are related to the intrusion of dikes of pegmatitic gabbro. Mineralogical and chemical data indicate that sulphide assemblates formed form residual magmatic sulphide-rich melts segregated from the parental volatile-rich pegmatitic gabbro melts.
