Epoxy resins are relatively expensive,however the long service time and high physical properties often helps to provide a favorable cost-performance ratio compared to other thermosets.The main fields where fire retardancy of epoxy resins is required are electronics for printed wiring boards and semiconductors encapsulation,and transportation (automotive,high speed trains,military and commercial aircraft) for composite structural and furnishing elements [McAdams and Cannon (1988)].Like any thermoset resin,epoxy resins can be rendered fire retardant either by incorporating fire retardant additives or by copolymerisation with reactive fire retardants.Additive type fire retardants in epoxy resins are mostly applied for coating or encapsulation,to avoid the risk of deterioration of physical properties in the constructional elements.
