Abstract: Hypermedia applications use multimedia objects that arelinked to each other via some application logic. Also, hypermedia applications can potentially become verystorage intensive because of the nature of data inthem. Hierarchical storage systems are an excellent wayto store large hypermedia applications. In this paperwe look, at the problem of placing multimedia objectsin a hierarchical storage system so that theirretrieval meets the needs of the application while atthe same time keeping storage intensive data on cheaperstorage. We use an abstract hierarchy approach alongwith an enhancement of the relationship managementmethodology to prose a framework for the design ofhypermedia applications. The abstract hierarchyconsists of a hierarchy of abstracts growing in sizeand linked together. The intrinsic nature of theabstract hierarchy makes it possible to map it easilyto both the hierarchical storage system and thehypermedia application paradigm. In this framework, thedesigner can determine where each abstract of theapplication can be placed on the storage system. !11
