The role of outdoor spaces’ design, as well as the mutual correspondence among urbanmicroclimate, indoor air climatemd air quality,have been specifically hvestigated for the casestudy of the Central Athems Area. A comprehensive urban design proposal including bioclimatictechniques to modify the outdoor entiomnent in one of the hottest cities in Europehave been carriedout withinthe framework of POLIS Research Project.Urban (re-) planning of outdoor areasby using natural elements has been regarded as the firststep to improve microclirnatic conditions in the thickly - built urban Athens areas.To pefiorm accurately the physical phenomena in the urban environment dtierent softwareresearch tools have been selected. More specifically, to assess climatic outdoor improvementsof the proposed architectural-natural measures,research software modelling works developedin POLIS have been used. To extend the research md to investigatethe influence of shadingand green spaces on the indoor building’sthermal behaviour a series of simulations have beenperformed using TRNSYS simuhtion programme.Relative mutual comparison of resuks clearly indicate that outer stiaces’ alternative design,even if limited to the btidings’ envelope, acts as prior microclimate modifier and deeplyimproves both outdoor and indoor air climateand quality.
