Abstract: A new electroholography system is introduced that usesa liquid crystal display, a photorefractive crystal,and a time- sharing display method. By using thephotorefractive crystal as a kind of screen throughwhich the hologram is recreated, we can realize highquality, off-axis, and computer-generated holograms.The time sharing approach enables an electronic displaydevice to display 3D objects clearly by breaking theminto parts that are displayed in sequential frames. Ifthe fames are cycled at a high enough speed, we seethese parts as a single object due to the afterimageeffect. This approach relaxes the strict dynamic rangerequirements that would normally be placed on theelectronic display device. The photorefractive crystalsuppresses the flicker caused by the time-sharingdisplay method. This paper first describes thetime-sharing method. Next, a new experimental 3D-TVsystem with a photorefractive crystal, strontium bariumniobate, is demonstrated. This system confirms theexciting future of electroholography. !12
