This paper describes the real time Ice Reconnaissance project in Canadian Ice Service (CIS), Environment Canada. The Crown owned Dash-7 aircraft is equipped with a SLAR (Side Looking Airborne Radar) and a Zeiss RMK mapping camera which are used to capture imagery. The aircraft navigation system provides annotation data to the imagery. Both imagery and annotation data are combined together by the downlinking system. The data can be either transmitted live to ships at sea or stored on disk in compressed or uncompressed format from which it can be retrieved and transmitted. The downlink can be controlled locally and remotely. The S-band transmitter transmits the SDLC (Synchronous Data Link Control) framed data in real time to ships and to Ice Reconnaissance Data Network (IRDNET) stations.The ICE-VU system, which is currently installed on Canadian Coast Guard Icebreakers, Ice Operational Offices (IOOs) and at CIS, is used to receive, import, geocode and catalogue imagery data. The raw data, received from the aircraft or CIS, are processed automatically in the background. The geocoded imagery is catalogued. The catalogued data can be used for displaying, analyzing imagery and for navigation purposes. The ICE-VU system provides advanced image analysis and navigational tools. This system will be installed on ice reconnaissance aircraft too to provide real time data quality assurance. It will allow the ice service specialist to view and analyze the processed imagery on board the aircraft. This system is exactly the same as the one installed on ships and IOOs.
