The paper presents some results from a project aiming at the development of adequate indices for drought monitoring at different scales. The main objective is to evaluate meteorological and satellite based indices for the spatial and temporal detection, assessment and monitoring of drought conditions. This paper shows first results of a comparison between the satellite derived Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) and the rainfall based Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI).
