PINRO has been carry out research of marine environmental conditions (spatial distribution and structure of sea surface temperature - SST; hydrodynamics inhomogeneous, which can be interpretated as eddies, meanders and currents; primary biological productivity zones), including visible observations in the Norwegian Sea using air surveys with purpose of mackerel distribution during summer more then 16 years. Also during our research we make direct of mackerel schools discovery with use of visible observation and remote sensing equipment (radar - SAR and SLAR).At present all our research using the remote sensing airborne technique are carried out on the base of scientifically grounded methods considering the knowledges and experience about environment accumulated for many years (more then 50 years), and knowledges about peculiarities of mackerel behaviour during summer time, which is period of feeding migration. Therefore in 1997-1998 we carried out our airborne remote sensing research on estimation of mackerel distribution in the Norwegian Sea during July-August. For this purpose we used aircraft flying-laboratory Antonov-26 BRL "Arctic", which was equiped remote sensing equipments working in the difference of electromagnetic wavelength ranges (visible, infra-red - IR and VHF - radar - side looking airborne radar - SLAR or synthetic aperture radar - SAR). Also from both sides of aircraft was carried out visible observations by experienced observers with use of «blisters» - special convex windows. Thus we use for our airborne research of mackerel distribution all-round air surveys.All information obtained during of these air surveys is represented in real position and time and is output to on board IBM PC computer in real geographic co-ordinates and time with use of GPS.At present during planning of each aircraft flight research were used ERS-1/2 SAR - information, which were received from Tromso Satellite Station by e-mail. This SAR-information were received in the near real time and real geographic co-ordinate.
