Development of laser technology has allowed industrial application of CO_2 lasers on non-contact processes as well the possibility of high-speed operation. The 10.6 μm radiation emitted by CO_2 lasers has proven to have a high efficiency for plastic processing. However, the decrease of radiation absorption as the thickness reduces makes difficult to obtain high cutting speeds with low laser power. In order to achieve high-speed cuts, a high power CO_2 laser was used. Plastic samples tested were Polypropylene (PP) and high density (HD) and low density (LD) polyethylene (PE). Tests show that it is possible to cut (without welding) the superposed HD PE and LD PE films with velocities up to 25 m/s. Differences on cutting parameters were found between them. It was also shown the existence of a band of energy density required to cut each kind of plastic, constant for each set of experimental conditions.
