In this paper a new generation sensor for atmosphere measurements from space is described. OME-EOS (=Ozone Monitoring Instrument for EOS) is an imaging spectrometer, mainly dedicated to measure ozone in the earth atmosphere. An extremely large field of view of 114 degrees in swath direction makes almost hlobal daily coverage of the earth possible. The spectral range is from 270-500 nm with a resolution between 0.4-0.65 nm. The straylight problem at wavelenghts lambda<300 nm is solved by applying an elegant optical configuration for the UV channel. Application of a a polarisation scrambler makes OMI-EOS insensitive for the polarisation of the incoming radiation. The spectra are detected with back-illuminated UV-sensitive CCD'S with 780 (spectral) X 576 (spatial) elements. OMI-EOS is being developed by a Dutch-finnish consortium and will be launched on board of the NASA CHEM satellite in 2003. In the following sections first some background is given concerning ozone detection, followed by a description of the instrunent. In section 5 the (expected) performance of OMI-EOS is shortly described. Finally some references are given in whichmore detailed information about the various aspects can be found.
