The combination of Internet technology and wireless mobility makes wireless LAN systems a promising technology for future wireless systems. However, current wireless LANs do not support quality of service (QoS). In this paper, we present a multicast handover extension to the Inter-Access Point Protocol (IAPP) to support adaptive QoS in Wireless LAN systems and evaluate the performance. We introduce the concepts of neighbor list, multicast handover and neighborcast in the IAPP. The use of a Neighborcast improves coordination between nearby access points and hence provides the possibility for multicast handover and adaptive QoS support. Since coordinations between neighbors of the access point are more important than that of far away access points, by deploying the neighborcast concept, not only can adaptive QoS be supported but also the scalability of the systems can be improved. The evaluation result shows that the proposed scheme is significantly better than the performance of a basic handover support.
