Design and operation of large diameter heavy media cyclone circuits in coal preparation

In the past decade or so, coal preparation equipment (particularly heavy media cyclones, screens and magnetic separators) has undergone significant changes. With coal prices trending to lower costs per ton, traditional coal washing circuitry is now growing obsolete due to higher processing costs. New circuits focus on fewer pieces of equipment processing higher tonnage at higher efficiencies. This paper discusses the selection of equipment, circuit design considerations and operating performance of large diameter heavy media cyclone circuits.
