Present paper offers a concise view of a transport monitoring system from sensor data to remote user applications. Sensing particular variables in mobile transport units or fleets through data communication networks offers a new and promising domain for multiple transoducer types. Small, low power onboard aoutonomous systems must be able to caputer, interpret and handle the information flow from sensor to consise meaningful messages through narrow band data links. The European dimension of aim covers multimodal transport with a tracking system which is open to new sensing requirements, suer needs or communication networks. Main design criteria have bee: flexibility for remote programming of mobile data collection units including new types of sensors, processing capabilities or data carriers, safety for secure and selective management of the information flow and reliability to warrant data consistence through complex and diverse transmission paths.
