An ageing population of embankment dams can be found in most European countries and internal erosion is liekly to be the most serious hazard for the majority of these dams. The proceses involved in internal erosion are not well understood. It is a hidden phenomenon and, until some feature such as a sinkhole appears at the surface of the embankment, it is difficult to identify and investigate. The speed of development is not easy to predict. The European Working Group on Internal Erosion in Embankment Dams was formed in 1993 and is bringing together experience of internal erosion from many countries.
