In the ZEDB project, data on failure events is collected for safety related components of German and some European nuclear power plants. To derive estimates for failure rates and probabilities per demand, a modern 2-stage Bayesian estimation code is used. This paper discusses the ZEDB approach for data collection and statistical estimation. It presents the state of the project and reports on experiences gained with pilot applications in the two boiling water reactors Krummel and Brunsbuttel operated by the HEW utility.
