Optimal maintenance and the planning of repair/;replacement needs good estimations of resodual lifetimes. In the past, attention has been paid to modelling the deterioration using renewal or non-homogeneous poison processes. More recently, models have been employed which have considered the estimation of residual lifetimes given conditional information. Clearly there is a need to employ models which reflect the complexities which arise in engineering based on the physical underlying process. In some situations it is not possilbe to model the physical processes and approximation will have to be used. The paper will review the iterature providing ways forward for obtaining better residual ifetimes. It will also consider some of the practical issues involved.
