European resarch and railway companies are presently carrying out a project funded by the Commission of the European Communities: moudlar s ystem for Reliability and Maintainability in European Rail Transport (REMAIN). One of the main issues is to apply reliability prediction methods to investigated the cost-effectiveness of using new railway condition monitoring equipment. This new equipment (in particular for monitoring of turnouts) has been tested out for some time, and a demonstrator line (Dortmund-Hamm) has started to take this in use. This paper presents a method for strategic maintenance planning (RESMAP). This method takes advantages of the Reliability Centred Maintnace (RCM) methodology. In RESMAP Life Cycle Costing has also been included as an integral part of the methodology.
