The rapid growth of digital imagery, the increasingly easy access to digital media, and the increasingly powerful digital media manipulation tools have made media security a very important issues. Digital watermarks ahve been proposed recently as the means for intellectual property right protection of multimedia data. This paer will present an overview of the characteristics of digital watermarks, their potential applications, and the state-of-the-art technologies. the principle of digital watermarking will be illustrated through a typical class of watermarking systems, and the importance of making explicit use of perceptual models in the watermarking system will be highlighted. The particular application for resolving rightful ownership will be discussed in some details. Some issues regarding the practice of digital watermarking will also be briefly discussed.
