Leishmaniasis has been identified as two of the six major tropical diseases by the W.H.O. It is a disease exclusively of the RES and is characterized by the presence of parasites in the liver and spleen and to a lesser extent, in the bone marrow. It results from multiplication of the leishmania within macrophages.
