Bioadhesive devices may facilitate controlled delivery of drugs to mucosal surfaces. However, the duration and effectiveness of drug delivery can be affected by both the properties and the strength of the bioadhesive bond. Water is an integral part of the bond structure and, in the case of hydrophilic matrix biopolymer devices, there will be a contribution to the bioadhesive bond from both the mucosal layer and the hydrated polymer surface of the drug delivery system. The extent and pattern of hydration within these layers may contribute directly to the strength and barrier properties of the bioadhesive bond formed.
