A novel hydrophilic oral absorption system using hydrophilic polyethylene oxide polymers (PEO) has been extensively investigated. This novel hydrophilic gel-forming oral controlled-release system enables the near zero order release of drug at a therapeutically effective rate as the tablet system travels throughout the digestive tract, including the colon, as shown schematically in Figure 1.
