Organic cationic compounds are actively secreted from blood to urine across the renal ubular epithelial cells via multiple transport nechanisms, including a membrane potential pendent transporter and a proton/organic cation antiporter in basolateral and brushborder membranes, respectively. Two renal membrane transporters, OCT1 and OCT2, which exhibit membrane potential dependence, have been cloned from rat and human (1-4). However, molecular identification of a proton/organic cation antiporter in the renal apical membrane, which is important for the efficient elimination of organic cations into urine, has not been reported.
