An adaptive rain fade compensation system is proposed for future Ka-Band, Spot-Beam Satellite Systems providing services to small user terminal with a nominal BER of 1 x 10 exp -10. ^The adaptive compensation system eliminates the need for rate convolutional inner coding on the uplink except dunng rain fades which results in significant satellite power savings for the onboard multiple-channel, demultiplexers, demodulators, and decoders. ^The NASA Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) operational performance indicates that the reliability of adaptive rain fade compensation is suitable for commercial systems. ^Review of the ACTS operational data shows that the adaptive rain compensation system is very reliable: i.e., in no cases did the system fail to successfully implement the fade compensation once the fade implementation threshold was crossed. ^(Author)
