The formulation of cleavage fracture toughness through the statistical modeling proposed by BEREMIN (1984) has been simplified by the present authors to the expression with the yield strength and the cleavage fracture strength of the materials.This formulation of fracture toughness was experimentally examined in order to mesoscopically analyze the influence of the mechanical and metallurgical factors on the fracture toughness of low carbon structural steels. Successful correlations wereobtained for more than forty kinds of low carbon steels and low alloy steels.Based on the description of the toughness, some topics on the deterioration in toughness were investigated.
