Although large slip of the tank, as observed in Alaska 1964, was not reported in Hyogo Nanbu Earthquake, the risk becomes a major concern in seismic engineering. The authors conducted slip experiment of Single Degree Of Freedom on potentialsliding mass (SDOF slip model) to observe slip behaviour. Using friction force during slip, an equation governing slip is formulated as a discontinuous linear vibration system. This paper highlights the similarities between tank slip and SDOF slip model.Comparison of the experimental results with the analytical results based on SDOF slip model corroborates its applicability with reasonable accuracy. Eight parameters are defined which determine quantity of slip of the tank. SDOF slip model is expanded tocover slip commencement analysis in case of prestressed anchored and non-uplifting tanks. Comparison of this slip commencement analysis with the value suggested in the corresponding design code indicates safety margin inherent in the design code.
